Former Gunner still open to Ghana switch ahead of 2026 World Cup

Former Gunner Eddie Nketiah has confirmed he’s still open to playing for Ghana in the future, though he’s focusing on his club football for the time being.

Eddie Nketiah has long been the subject of speculation about his international future, having represented England throughout his youth career whilst also remaining eligible for a switch to Ghana.

Nketiah has made his international debut for England, but he only played one game in a friendly match against Australia. That still leaves open the possibility of a switch of allegiance, similar to Declan Rice playing three friendlies for Ireland then changing to England.

That possibility is perhaps relevant now more than ever, with Ghana having qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

The World Cup provides extra motivation for Ghana to convince their best eligible players to pick them over the alternatives, and it will be tempting to players like Nketiah to get the chance to play on the biggest stage.

Discussing his international future in an interview this week, the former Arsenal striker insisted his focus remains on his club football, but he also admitted he still has a decision ahead of him.

“At the moment, I’m just enjoying my football with Crystal Palace – that’s been my main focus,” Nketiah said.

“I’m Ghanaian and there’s no denying that. Obviously I’m proud of my roots and where I’ve come from. I’m sure the future will take care of itself and what will be will be.

“I haven’t had any calls or anything recently, so my focus has just been on playing well each week and helping my team win trophies. If I’m doing well and doing the right things then naturally the international future will resolve itself when it’s time to make that decision.”

With two goals in eight games and just one start for Crystal Palace this season amid a couple of injury setbacks, Nketiah hasn’t played as much as he would’ve hoped, but he’s having an impact when available.

If he can get fit and continue to add to his goal tally over the next six months, the World Cup may then start to become a realistic option.
