Jason Atherton is one of the most talented, well-respected and internationally successful chefs this country has ever produced – and yet, we still don’t see him on the telly that often.

That’s all about to change, however, as Atherton is soon to add fronting a primetime BBC television show to his already pretty packed CV. The multi Michelin-starred chef is the host of The Chef’s Brigade, a new reality television show that see a group of young cooks undergo training in the kitchen with Atherton.

But who is the chef and restaurateur extraordinaire putting the culinary ingénues through their paces? From working with Gordon Ramsay to opening restaurants across three continents, here’s everything you need to know about Jason Atherton.

Who is Jason Atherton?

Dynamic duo: Jason Atherton and his wife Irha

Jason Atherton is a British chef and restaurateur whose portfolio boasts multiple Michelin stars and highly acclaimed restaurants around the world. Raised on a caravan park in Skegness, Atherton’s early career saw him become the first British chef to complete a stage at El Bulli in Spain, formerly touted as the best restaurant in the world. After working under the likes of Marco Pierre White and Pierre Koffmann, he became a key member of the Gordon Ramsay Group team. He has since founded his own restaurant group, The Social Company, which he runs with his wife Irha Atherton.

Where are his restaurants in London?

Roast with the most: The Michelin-starred fare at flagship restaurant Pollen Street Social

Jason Atherton’s group has six restaurants and two bars currently open in London. These include Michelin-starred Pollen Street Social, Social Eating House and City Social, along with Berners Tavern at the London Edition hotel, and Italian-inspired spot Hai Cenato.

In recent months, Atherton closed Little Social in Mayfair and reopened it as 5 Social, before announcing that he would launch a new restaurant The Betterment at the Biltmore hotel. The Social Company also looks after The Blind Pig bar adjacent to Social Eating House, and has recently launched Pavlova’s, a cocktail bar at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

In the past, The Social Company’s portfolio has also included Social Wine and Tapas, Temple and Sons and Sosharu, but those restaurants have since closed. Atherton has also alluded to plans for a 16-seater restaurant called H.O.M.E. in Mayfair, and to relocation plans for Sosharu.

Why is Jason Atherton on The Chef’s Brigade?

Seriously skilled: A dessert at Social Eating House

BBC Two series The Chef’s Brigade will see Atherton train ten young cooks, all of whom show signs of raw talent but are lacking in the skills needed to make it in the professional restaurant industry. Rather than competing to be the best, Atherton aims to turn them into a strong team – a chef’s brigade – but those who slip up are still in danger of going home.

When did he work with Gordon Ramsay?

Atherton joined the Gordon Ramsay Group in 2001 as executive chef from the company’s Dubai restaurant Verre. After four years, Atherton helped Ramsay open Maze in Grosvenor Square, a restaurant concept which grew internationally to include locations in Prague, Cape Town, Melbourne and Qatar. Atherton parted ways with the group in 2010, saying that him and Ramsay “fell out over money”Atherton is soon set to open his latest restaurant, The Betterment, opposite Ramsay’s new venture Lucky Cat, which has replaced Maze in Grosvenor Square.

Where are his other restaurants around the world?

Jason Atherton’s first solo restaurant wasn’t actually in the UK – in 2010, he opened Table No.1 in Shanghai. Since then, his restaurant empire has remained a global operation. Along with his eight-and-counting establishments in London, Atherton’s Social Company also counts another nine restaurants across six countries in three different continents.
