Sophie, Countess of Wessex, became a royal when she married Prince Edward on 19 June 1999. Kate Middleton has been part of the Royal Family since her and Prince William, 37, tied the knot at Westminster Abbey in April 2011. Since they are both working royals, it is no surprise that Sophie and Kate have crossed paths while performing their royal duties. Their body language has shown the close relationship the pair have and how Sophie could have been an important help when Kate entered the family, body language expert, Judi James, revealed.
Since marrying Prince Edward, Sophie has managed to perform her royal duties while still keeping her private life separate, Judi explained.
She told Express.co.uk: “When Sophie married Edward she was hailed as the new Diana, but what followed looked like a masterclass in hunkering in as the soap-opera-free royal bride who managed to be a stabilising influence on her husband while keeping press and royal fan attention to a minimum.
“Sophie is also said to be a close ally of her mother-in-law the Queen and in terms of her body language she tends to blend some of the signals of the kind of laid-back calm and fun that we get from Zara with the stoic, deft formality of the Queen herself.”
These personality traits could have been why she was the perfect person to help Kate when she first married into the family.
“This attitude must have made her the perfect royal wife to welcome and induct Kate into the Royal Family, especially in the face of William’s horror of bringing Kate into the same circus that he watched his mother suffer,” Judi explained.
“Sophie’s formula does appear to have been copied by Kate too as – so far – she has managed to tread the very fine line of creating interest that is positive but not unmanageable.”
Kate appears to have taken tips from Sophie and the Countess has looked out for Kate in a maternal way.
On many occasions, their body language showed they are close and both royals seem to be happy when together.
Judi said: “Many of the poses of the two women together show Sophie face-checking Kate with quite strong bouts of watchful-looking eye contact to suggest she’s taking a semi-maternal approach.
“She also has raised brows and what’s called a ‘pinging’ smile that implies she wants to ensure Kate is enjoying herself.
“There is some mirroring when the two women walk together but it’s primarily Sophie projecting the stronger signals of relaxed confidence while Kate smiles happily at her side.”
When Sophie first starting dating Prince Edward in 1993, she gathered a lot of media attention which caused the Prince to react.
Edward issued a statement which called for the privacy of the Countess and it seems like she has managed to keep most of her life under wraps since then.
When Kate was dating Prince William, he chose to release a similar statement and Kate has managed to keep her life separate from her work as well.
Sophie has worn over £1 million of royal tiaras since becoming part of the family, but where is the jewellery now?
Some of these items were probably borrowed from the Queen, however Sophie may have kept hold of her custom made wedding tiara.
