However, there are a few tips on how to remove earwax without having to visit your doctor.
The NHS recommends putting two to three drops of olive or almond oil into your ear twice a day for a few days if the earwax doesn’t fall out on its own.
Over a couple of weeks lumps of earwax should fall out of your ear, especially at night when you’re lying down.
The NHS notes there’s “no evidence that ear candles or ear vacuums get rid of earwax”.
A pharmacists can also help you with excessive earwax build-up.
They could recommend treatments such as chemical drops to dissolve the wax.
Note that you should not use drops if you have a hole in your eardrum, known as a perforated eardrum.
