Users saw the funny side suggesting the social media platforms’ rivals including Twitter, Snapchat and Telegram would be celebrating the global outage.

Facebook, which owns WhatsApp and Instagram, was forced to confirmed in a tweet they are aware of issues and are working to resolve them.

Many jokers compared the situation to Netflix’s gory survival drama Squid Game. Others to a scene from Only Fools and Horses.

DownDetector, which tracks outages, logged nearly 80,000 reports for WhatsApp, 30,000 from Instagram users and more than 50,000 for Facebook.

Data from the website suggests the outage is affecting user accounts across the world.

Some people also reported problems using Facebook’s virtual reality headset platform, Oculus.

Thousands reported outages before 5pm on Monday which persisted for hours.

WhatsApp said on Twitter: “We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment.

“We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.”

Instagram said: “Instagram and friends are having a little bit of a hard time right now, and you may be having issues using them. Bear with us, we’re on it.”

A Facebook company spokesman said: “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products.

“We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience.”
