Craig Holness, a 51-year-old British lorry driver with 27 years of experience, told Reuters: “Wages will have to go up so prices for everything we deliver, everything you buy on the shelves, will have to go up too.”

Lord Wolfson, a prominent Brexiteer, demanded that the Government take a “more decisive” approach to the acute shortage of lorry drivers, saying that the current situation “was foreseen, and widely predicted for many months”.

Retailers have also warned of impending price rises on the run up to Christmas, as a lack of warehouse workers and higher shipping costs are likely to affect demand.

High street retailer Next has warned customers to prepare for higher prices in the coming months.
