T. Boone Pickens has died at the age of 91, his spokesman, Jay Rosser, said. The billionaire tycoon passed away on Wednesday, September 11 at 1.30pm. ET (5.30pm GMT). Mr Pickens was in declining health and suffered series of strokes and a fall in 2017, but died of natural causes.

Who was T. Boone Pickens?

Thomas Boone Pickens was an American capitalist, born on May 22, 1928.

He made his fortune in fossil fuels, starting out with an initial $2,500 investment.

His thinking eventually evolved in a way that led him to embrace wind, solar, and other forms of natural energy to chip away at the dominance of fossil fuels.

He spent his latter years advocating for alternative energy.

The father of five was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma and his father also worked in oil, as an oil and mineral landman.

Mr Pickens first began his career in oil and gas and helped to pioneer shareholder activism in the 1980s.

In January last year, he announced he was closing his BP Capital energy hedge fund because of declining health, although he had “no intention of fading away.”

He previously had acknowledged having several strokes in late 2016 and in July 2017 suffered a fall that required hospitalisation.

Mr Pickens has given more than $700 million away to charity, of which nearly $500 million has been donated to Oklahoma State University.

He is among the billionaires who have made The Giving Pledge, a commitment to give away half of his wealth for charitable purposes
